Mictlantecuhtli~(death)
This is a replica of an original outlet found in Veracruz, Mexico. The original can be found in a museum in Mexico. The image of Mictlantecuhtli (in Nahuatl, a native American language from Mexico) which translates to the essence of death, symbolizes he who represents death.
Mictlantecuhtli is also known as the "lord of the underworld". Mictlantecuhtli is the representation of the place of the discarnate and death. The place after life here on Earth. There are various representations of Mictlantecuhtli.
To the Mexica (native people of Mexico), death represented transition and regeneration... the other side of the coin of what we are currently experiencing…part of the life cycle…the shadow that we are all accompanied with.
This Mictlantecuhtli was hand made by Maestro Artesano Martinez~Artisan Master Martinez, who is a talented and expert in making pre-hispanic replicas and art. The clay utilized to make these figures are from the state of Mexico and Oaxaca. They are then fired outdoors inside a brick room. There is an extensive process for each of these pieces of art and no two will ever be exactly the same.
