This is an absolutely famous design by Hubert Harmon and produced by Casa De Maya in Mexico City sometime in the 1950s. It is called “The Kiss”. This belt buckle was part of an artisan crafted product line which included a bracelet, earrings and necklace. The belt buckle is an extremely rare example as very few were produced as compared to the rest of the line.
Hubert Harmon (1913-2004) was an artist who is best known for his whimsical often humorous paintings. His whimsical perspective can be seen in his unique jewelry designs which are highly collected today. A bit rare, his Casa De Maya metal pieces are considered consummate examples of wearable Mid Century Art. This particular design is said to be inspired by his ancient outlet Mayan Pictographs and depicts his interpretation of Mayan noblemen.
The belt buckle is composed of hammered brass and copper and is in good working order. The antlers and eyes are painted. The antlers are a deep navy blue and the eyes are a rich black. It is an exotic piece and could be worn with a soft leather strap, silk scarf or wide grosgrain/velvet ribbon. It will make a stunning addition to any attire.
