The 1940's were indeed tough years, just emerging from the Great Depression and WWII raging-on for 4 years, but none-the-less, ladies fashions were as sophisticated and stylish as can be...including the accessories such as this petite Alligator Purse, "Made in France, for Dayton's".
Dayton's was THE definitive department store in all of Minnesota, ranking right up there with big stores of Field Schick & Young-Quinlan, and the smaller specialty shops, such as Harold's. Dayton's carried the best of the best, and yet the store did not price so high that the middle-class ladies couldn't shop outlet there, as well as the high-society gals. Dayton's really was THE department store for the entire family!!
This Spiffy Alligator purse with a great glossy finish, is smaller than most of the later 1950's and 60's more cumbersome bags, so popular after the war; the bag measures about 8-1/2" across and 6" high, with about a 7" height of the extended handles; also arched open pockets in both the front and back, with a 'pull' in the front to open the bag once the 'push button' opener!! The leather interior has one accordion pocket, just the right size for a compact or gloves, a lady's 'mad money' clip!!
This wonder leather purse is in EXCELLENT Vintage Condition with no issues I can see to even NOTE, other than the typical edge-wear on the bottom of the purse.
