Very nice piece. I did run hot water over this piece and smelled a whiff of camphor. Can be used to hold a scarf or as a brooch. Very unique and highly collectible.

FYI about cameos………………………

Many of my customers over the years have requested to purchase a “real cameo”….I have to come to believe that what they are searching for is a hand carved shell cameo. However, there are many types of cameos such as “hard stone or agate” that are very real as well.

First and for most I am not an expert on cameos. Please don't hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns.

The smaller the ring the older it probably is. Remember women were much smaller a hundred years ago. If your looking at an antique ring that is a size 10 and you can not tell that it has been resized it may not be an antique.

Cameos can be signed by the artist on the back of the shell cameo.

Cameos typically depict the era of what women look like in that period. Mythology, pointy noses and chins, and civil war era clothing are normally much older than cute perky nosed little girls of the 80's and 90's. Cameos of elegant women wearing pearls are generally from the 50's and 60's. The more detailed or intricate a cameo is the higher the price.

Hard stone cameos seldom have a complete nose. It's a fragile part of the cameo and often gets knocked around when the cameo is worn. Hard stone typically refers to agate, but is any stone or gem other than a shell or molded glass or plastic cameo.

Shell cameos come in many colors.

Angel skin cameos are carved from the pinkest part of the shell and will always be a very soft pink.

Coral cameos are an orangey salmon color.
