Bursting with color, this Peruvian tapestry will bring joy to any room. Arpillera is a traditional folk art, using appliqué, embroidery and patchwork to depict scenes of every day life. This one is wonderful! I bought it in the 1970's and while now, many arpilleras are signed by their artists, it was uncommon back then. Too bad! Because this was created by a true master: The composition and handling of the figures and the landscape is so deft and skillful. The stitches are perfect and the interplay between the fabric surfaces and the sculptural elements (the apples, the Alpacas, the flowers) is rythmic and playful.
This vibrant landscape depicts a quotedian scene outlet at a small farm, set against an Andean landscape. Men and women in traditional costume, tend Lamas and pick apples amid cactus and blooming flowers. Full of life and delight!
