Large white platter with peacock bird design, Sardinian traditional pottery, extra outlet large white serving dish or plate, folk art, signed Farci
Stunning extra large white serving platter, hand made with a traditional Sardinian design, featuring two peacoks either side of a tree of life, and geometric patterns around the edge, a common theme in Sardinian ceramics, showing the influence of Arabic culture where similar themes are found. It's a charming design, beautifully executed. Sardinian ceramics are distinctly different in their decoration from other Italian ceramics, very often they are covered in white ceramic slip which is carved away to reveal the terracotta colour underneath, resulting in a very linear design. This design does the exact opposite, creating a design with a raised line, but the result is similar.
The platter is signed on the back G.Farci. Farci is a family owned company of Sardinian ceramicists founded by Vincenzo Farci in the 1930s and still going today in the hands of his grandson. In the mid 20th century Farci was one of the most prolific and important ceramic firms in Sardinia, while remaining true to the traditions of Sardinian pottery. Vincenzo's sons were named Giuseppe, Gaetano and Gianfranco, so one of these was certainly the G. Farci who created this platter. They worked from the 1950s onwards, so I would estimate that the dish dates from the 1960s or 70s. It's in pretty good shape apart from a single small chip (see below) and could still be used as a serving dish, fruit bowl or table centerpiece, or even hung on a wall. It's areally fabulous and unique piece, certain to make a statement.
The white on white pattern of this plate was really hard to photograph! Please take the time to zoom in on the photos to really appreciate the beauty of this piece.
