“Redwork is a form of American embroidery, also called art needlework, that developed in the 19th century and was particularly popular between 1855 and 1925. It traditionally uses red thread, chosen because red dyes were the first commercially available colorfast dyes, in the form of Turkey red embroidery floss.[2] Redwork designs are composed of simple stitches and were mainly used to decorate household objects in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially quilts.“
This rabbit is a sort of homage to that tradition of red work. It's made from felted cream colored wools upcycled from various sources (blankets, etc), loose wool outlet roving, wool yarn, red cotton thread, and lots and lots of hand stitching. Felted wool sections are formed into torso, head and limb shapes and stitched and stitched until the desired shape is achieved. You can spot a bit of crochet on one ear and arm. There is no measuring in this approach, but rather a free form and intuitive way of creating. Wool roving was needle felted overtop of stitched areas, and more stitching was added. There is a yarn covered mealy loop on the upper back for easy wall mounting. The piece is approximately 20” in length. A truly one of a kind soft sculpture to imbue your space with play, kindness and empathy.
