Some history on Author and Publisher

The publisher of this book, David C. Cook Publishing Co (which was located in Illinois at the time) gave a $1,000 prize to any person who could write a book that could set a child's heart on fire for Jesus Christ. The winner of the prize was Florence M. Kinglsey, and the book was "Titus A Comrade of the Cross". This was the beginning of her published career; she went on to write and have published a number of other books, some of which were religious. The book features Titus, one of the thieves who was crucified with Jesus.

The publisher of this book, David C. The book was wildly successful; after the first publication in December of 1894, and has stood the test of time - it is as popular now as it was in 1894. In 1997 the book received the Lamplighter Book of the Year! In a review of the book in 2009, the review said that book was "very doctrinally sound"... "a very good read"... and "a very refreshing fictional tale that stands out among the plethora of modern Christian fiction:". The book has been re-published a large number of times down through the years. The author, who died in the 1930's, would have been gladdened to see her book hailed as a masterpiece, to receive such kudos, and to be read by so many people -- over 100 years later.

The publisher, David C Cook, is still in business today in Colorado - a non-profit Christian publisher that uses the profits they make for a global ministry. They published then and still publish Sunday School materials as well as books.
The book is printed on inexpensive paper, with paper wraps. The cover, which states that the story is a "$1,000 prize winner" (quite a tidy sum in 1894), also has a picture of the author. The book is only 90 pages long, and includes an appendix in which the author tells of her research, and decisions about the story line in her book. In her appendix, she states "My prayer for this book is that it may go out into the world and preach the Gospel of Jesus". The cover and papers of the book are chipped, as the paper was inexpensive. The pages are browned, and foxed. This original first publication of the book in December, 1894, features wonderful green holly with red berries, appropriate for Christmas. The book is profusely illustrated, and the back pages are devoted to advertising other of the publishers offerings, as well as an offer for a $1 edition of this book - a fine printing that was published in 1895. The publisher received over 200,000 orders for this "2ND" printing, in a fine binding, and helping to fulfill the author's wish for the book!

This is a rare, First PUBLISHED Edition of a wonderful book that has withstood the test of time!
