Product code: Vintage outlet Parker Brothers "Game of Presidents Up-to-Date," ca. 1929, rare card game, complete, very good condition

A vintage card game, "The Game of Presidents Up-to-Date", made by Parker Brothers ca. 1929-1930 (I was not able to find a firm date, as this appears to be a fairly rare game, but the last president in the game is Herbert Hoover, with dates of "1929- "). Each president has two cards; the "A" card has his life and outlet administration dates and party, and the "B" card has historical events related to his administration. The game is complete, with 54 cards (27 pairs) and the instructions. The card backs have an interesting design, combining the White House and the Capitol dome on a field of stars.

While this does not sound like a particularly fun game (at least until you have played it enough to remember, for example, dates and events associated with Millard Fillmore), it is historically interesting as an example of a Parker Brothers "educational" game, and interesting to see what was considered "important" about each president in the 1920s. Its lack of "fun appeal" probably also meant that it was not a big seller - which would account for how few examples seem to have survived.

This game, which still has part of its original price tag from the Lasalle & Koch Co. (Toledo department store), was in a "time capsule" box of games found in my grandparents' summer cottage on Lake Erie - it looked like the box had been brought there around 1940, and barely opened since. (I am listing a few other items from the box as well - with the proceeds going toward cottage maintenance.)

dimensions (outside of box): 5 3/8" x 3 3/4" x 7/8"

Condition: Cards are in very good condition, with light wear; the front of the William McKinley "B" card has some slight browning/foxing. (The game was apparently used, but not very much, and any condition issues are a result of being stored in a slightly acidic box for 70 years.) The box is a bit dirty, and has light edge wear, with some foxing inside, but is otherwise in excellent condition.
