Pier Paolo Pasolini (Bologna, Emilia-Romagna; March 5, 1922-Ostia, Lazio; November 2, 1975) was an Italian writer, poet and film director. He is one of the most recognized artists of his generation, as well as one of the most revered filmmakers of his country's filmography. He also distinguished himself as an actor, journalist, philosopher, novelist, playwright, painter and political figure. He is considered a controversial character in Italy, due to his forceful style and the sexual themes of some of his works, considered taboo, for which he is considered an outstanding figure in European literature and cinematographic arts. His murder sent shockwaves through Italy and the rest of the world. The authorship and circumstances of his murder are still under debate.

He began in 1961 as a director, and soon after created a sort of second Neorealism, exploring aspects of everyday life, in a tone close to that of the Commedia dell'arte, focusing his gaze on the marginal characters, crime and poverty that Italy has carried with it since the post-war period, and establishing a narrative and visual style in which pathos and irony prevail over the coarse and sometimes sordid humor of his stories.
