From 1885, the rare first edition of The Spy of the Rebellion, by Allan Pinkerton, Chief of the United States Secret Service, as published by M.A. Winter & Hatch, Hartford, Connecticut. Three inches thick, 688 pages. Bound in terra cotta colored cloth, gilt titles. Note the gilt emblem on the front board, a gilt eye outlet with the slogan We Never Sleep. Allan J. Pinkerton was a Scottish-American abolitionist, detective, and spy, best known for creating the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in the United States and his claim to have foiled a plot in 1861 to assassinate president-elect Abraham Lincoln.
