Nils Thorsson Baca Dish, Royal Copenhagen Fajance Dish, Ellen Malmer Baca Ashtray, Scandinavian Modern Pottery,Danish Modern Ceramic Ashtray

This listing is for a beautiful mid 20th century Danish modern abstract organic design porcelain dish or ashtray. This mid century modern style ceramic dish was designed in the late 1960's by outlet the Danish artist, Ellen Malmer, as part of the BACA collection for Royal Copenhagen Fajance of Denmark. It is hand decorated in earthy shades of brown, yellow, olive green, and white featuring an abstract flower motif. The dish is marked with the piece and pattern number 666/3603 along with the Royal Copenhagen hallmark (a crown and 3 wavy lines) and Ellen Malmer's insignia in a ring. The dish measures approximately 4-5/8 inches in diameter and is 1 inch high. It is in excellent used vintage condition consistent with age and use with no cracks, chips, or repairs. There is some light shelf wear on the back and the remnants of a shop label. This is really a pretty piece of mid century modern Danish art pottery that will make a great addition to your collection or the perfect gift!

Ellen Malmer ( B 1942 – ) is one of the great designers and artists who worked for Royal Copenhagen at the height of its popularity in the mid to late twentieth century. She was part of the group working with Nils Thorsson producing the now iconic Baca and Tenera series for Royal Copenhagen. Malmer trained at the Design School in Copenhagen and started with Royal Copenhagen as a designer in 1965 working there until 1988, primarily with Fajance ware. After leaving Royal Copenhagen she has worked in her own right as an Artist in the fields of textiles and collage/painting.

The Royal Copenhagen brand was founded as the Royal Danish Porcelain Manufactory in 1775 by chemist Frantz Heinrich Müller (1738-1820), under the protection of Denmark's Queen Juliane Marie. Many of the European monarchies at that time had their own porcelain factories and it was good diplomatic practice amongst royalty and aristocracy to give fine porcelain as gifts. Over time, Royal Copenhagen has passed hands from succeeding Danish sovereigns to the Aluminia faience company. Aluminia was a Danish factory of faience or earthenware pottery, established in Copenhagen in 1863. In 1882, the owners of Aluminia purchased the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory. The factories were operated independently under their respective trade names until 1969, when the use of the Aluminia name was ended. Since then the products have been sold under the mark "Royal Copenhagen Denmark Fajance."

The hallmark of Royal Copenhagen porcelain is painted on the back of each piece and comprises Royal Copenhagen's well-known signature of authenticity, a mark of fine craftsmanship and Danish porcelain art. The hallmark consists of a crown, waves, and the artist's mark. The crown symbolizes Royal Copenhagen's beginnings in the hands of the entrepreneurial monarchy and is decorated with the "Dagmar Cross". The waves symbolize Denmark's three most important bodies of water; the Sound, the Great Belt and the Little Belt. Finally, each painter had their own stamp, marked on the bottom of every piece of porcelain.
