Herkimer Diamonds are not diamonds, but the mineral quartz, owing its name to Herkimer County, New York, USA, the place where it was discovered in the early 1800's. They have been formed over the past five million years, the special conditions cause double terminated crystals. The crystals have points on both outlet ends instead of just one end, they are naturally faceted, with a diamond-like geometrical shape, each having eighteen facets and 2 points.
The Herkimer Diamond crystal is also known as a Middleville Diamond or a Little Falls Diamond. They may be colorless, or contain rainbow inclusions, air bubbles, or black coal within the crystals. Inclusions add authenticity, it gives the gemstone their deep hue. The tiniest bit of external growth occurrences mark the crystal as genuine. As this is a product of nature, size, shape and clarity will vary.
Each of the Herkimer Diamonds is unique and carries its own personality. The photos don't do them justice, photographing crystals can be difficult, as they are so reflective.
