What does "gold-plated" actually mean?
When gilding, objects are covered with a thin layer of gold.
Our jewelry is therefore superficially gold-plated. The gilding is carried out with the help of electroplating technology. Electroplating is an electrochemical deposition, i.e. a coating on the workpiece in an electrolytic bath. However, this resulting gold layer is very thin.
How long this gold plating will last is difficult to predict, as this is influenced by a number of outlet factors. Usually very thin gold plating is used (standard), which means that the parts that are worn daily will also wear out very quickly.
On average, gold-plated jewelry can last about two years before gilding starts or wears out. However, the time span can be much shorter or longer, depending on whether or not you properly care for the piece of jewelry.
Here's how gold-plated jewelry lasts longer: Avoid contact with makeup, perfume or deodorant, sunscreens, moisturizers, soap, detergents, and other chemicals you come into daily contact with. These chemicals can react with gilding and lead to faster degradation.
