This isn't just an amazing brooch, it is a wonderful story.

Not so long ago I purchased the contents of a farmhouse that had been in the same family for generations. The best part of the journey was having the 90 something year old owner give me the stories behind so much of the treasure. (She had been born in the outlet house and was sorry not to die there but has met a nice man in the retirement home)

This brooch ,she told me, was a Christmas gift to her mother from her father in the 1930's. It was quite a surprise to her mother, as she did not often wear jewelry and because of the depression and the financial circumstances, did not expect a a Christmas present.

Her husband hadn't expected to give her a Christmas present either. But he had generously given five bushels of potatoes from the harvest to a native family on a nearby reserve. Just because, not as a trade. But that's no the way it works....the First Nations recipient was so thankful for this gift that he reciprocated by making this birch bark brooch for the farmer.

"Small and simple blessings bring the greatest joy," the owner told me. She said her mother only wore it on the most special occasions, which is probably why it is in such perfect condition.

It probably should be in a museum.

It is made from birch bark, in 5 layers. Four of the layers are tooled and cut into designs and alternate in light and dark shades of bark. It is oval . An extra layer has been put on the back to hold the pin.

It measures 2.25 inches by 1.5.
