I've never seen anything quite like this striking and humongous medal before. The artsy modernist medal, imbued with a velvety marine blue patina, dates from the mid-twentieth century and centers on a Madonna and Child. The text VIRGO PROTEGATTE, which translates to Virgin's Protection, partilally surrounds the image. Besides a medal, this unique piece also makes for a striking necklace pendant or paperweight or objet d'art. An extraordinary conversation piece signed by E. (Élie) Pellegrin on the lower reverse side of the medal. Measures 2 5/8" across x 3" tall without the bail.

Élie Pellegrin (1914-2001) was a famous French sculptor born at the beginning of WWI into a devoutly Christian family. His staunch faith became a major influence in the wonderful art that he created during his life.
