Detailed etching of shipbuilding courtyard in Venice by artist Lionel Barrymore. Framed with slim solid wood frame, new black mat, under glass. Circa 1955.
This is part of a series of prints made posthumously from Barrymore's original copper etching plates by Brown and Bigelow during the mid 1950s to early 1970s.
ABOUT – The artist is Lionel Barrymore (American 1875 - 1954) who was an actor (radio, stage, screen), film director and composer. He was well known in his roles as Mr Potter in Frank Capra's outlet "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946) and Mr Scrooge in Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" (1938), and won an Oscar for his performance in "A Free Soul" (1931). As a young man, he went to Paris to study art. He returned in the early 1900s to enter the family business of acting. He was not happy with acting and could be found drawing between scenes on movie sets. He also painted but produced many etchings. He was a member of the Society of American Etchers in the 1940s.
CONDITION - Art - good but aging is seen in yellowing of paper. Frame - some minor scratches consistent with age.
NOTES - Plate marks viable. Print is mid 1950 but frame is mid 1960s. Print has been trimmed to 12 by 14 inches. Some photos taken without glass in order to show art more clearly and without glare.
