This is a fine general map of the United States, Canada and Mexico drawn by John Rapkin, showing the borders of the United States and Canada according to the 1848 settlement in the Oregon and British Columbia region. Alaska is, of course, still Russian territory at this time: the great real estate deal was not to take place until 1867.
The vignettes are of interest here. Contemporary curiosity about the Indians of North outlet America manifests itself n the illustration at the lower left, inspired by the work of they artists George Catlin and his celebrated North American Indian Portfolio of 1844, also Catherwood's view of an ancient Mexican monument nearby, together with illustrations of Inuit at the top and Niagara at the right.
