French Antique Roman Balance Scale, Decorative Antique Industrial Counterbalance Scale, found and flogged in France. Fabulous old Roman scale of good proportion, conservative estimate 1920's. It operates by moving the sliding weight along the notched and indexed bar until you counterbalance whatever you have in the weighing pan.

Just below the hook used to hang the whole thing, there is another hook above the pan. This allows things in bags to be weighed that might spill out of the pan. Can't be sure what it's original mission was - although not misshapen the pan has many outlet small dents, as if it had been used for many years to weigh something quite weighty & roughly shaped.

It is fully functional, the brass has been coated to prevent tarnish and is a beautiful deep gold color that will not tarnish. It would be easy to hang and display it with another display item by adjusting the counterbalance weight to balance whatever you put in the pan.
