Marion Stow Cook (1875-1910) was born in Sandusky, Ohio, and moved to Oregon around 1890 where she was a resident of Portland and Hood River. Voices of the City is written for Portland and features four of her own illustrations depicting local scenes. The pages of poetry are illustrated with page borders (showing ships on the water and the train station) which are also of her design. Her writing career was cut short when she died of consumption (tuberculosis) a mere nine months after this was published.
