The long, flowing maxi look was an essential part of 1970s fashion. While there have always been long dresses, the maxi as we know it was first shown at an Elizabeth Arden fashion show in 1968. The new, longer style was the work of a Dominican by the name of Oscar de outlet la Renta, who had been couturier to Jackie Kennedy and who went on to serve the rich and famous for generations.
As with any new fashion, the original maxis would initially have been the sole preserve of the avant-garde, haute-couture, hoity-toity elite of the fashion world; for the rest of us, the maxi was purely a phenomenon of the 1970s.
Length was not the only big difference to the mini. In contrast to the bold, angular, space-age mini of the late 1960s, the soft, flowing maxi of the 1970s tends to reflect ‘alternative' or ‘peasant' influences, with natural, earthy colours and a soft, feminine feel.
