Product code: Antique Opaline Blue Portieux Vallerysthal Compote/Candy Dish outlet With Lid
Antique opaline blue Portieux Vallerysthal compote from the early 1900s. Approx. 8 1/2” H x 6” dia. Good condition with no chips or cracks. Portieux was founded in 1705 by Francois Magnien under the patronage of Duke Leopold of Lorraine, and was located in Vosges. Vallerystahl was founded in the 1830s and in 1855 it became part of the "Société des Verreries Réunies de la Plaine-de-Walsch et Vallérysthal". The company merged with Portieux after the German Empire's occupation of Moselle in 1870, after which it incorporated as "Verreies Reunies de Vallerystahl et Portieux" in France and "Vereingte Glasshutten von Vallerystahl and Portieux" in Germany. The idea behindname was that it would help to avoid complications outlet when ownership of the region changed. Portieux/Vallerystahl is perhaps most famous for making opaque glass, particularly opaline blue glass. This particular piece was produced at least as early as 1894. Portieux Vallerystahl ceased production in 1977.
