First American edition, first state of the first printing hardcover copy of The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien (Houghton Mifflin, 1977). With map attached to rear endpaper in great shape. Has “Father Giles” misprint on bibliography page and broken type on page 229, the latter of which was fixed within the first print run. Jacket is protected in archival sleeve but with some mild shelf wear around outlet the edges, small tear to bottom edge of back cover and two small punctures near spine of back jacket cover. Boards are straight and clean with gilt design and lettering remaining clear and crisp. Binding is tight and spine is straight. All pages are clean and unmarked. See photos for condition.
