Charming antique silver knitting needle guards in the shape of jugs. These needle guards are Dutch and still have the original chain, with hook. They are marked with the old sword on the hook and the eye on the jug.
In the 19 and early 20th century knitting needles still had points at two ends. Needle guards where used to prevent the stitches from slipping off when you weren't working on the project. The needles would be clasped between both guards, the guards kept in place by folding the chain and hooking it to itself to tighten it. In the last pictures you see the pair of needle guards as they would have been used, here with the set of five needles I use for knitting fingerless mittens. In fact these are a bit too small as I couldn't pull the chain tight, but you get the idea.
The jugs are 1.6" (4,2 cm) high and the chain is 11.6" (30 cm).
They are in good condition, only sign of their age being small dents in the bottom of the jugs, caused by the storage of the needles. The fun tiny jugs are ready outlet for use, but also very collectible!
