These types of animal sculptures were produced in the Chinese Tang Dynasty for funerary purposes, with some examples being quite large. This is a smaller piece that looks like those seen in museums, including marks and nicks in the glaze. These flaws may have been original to the piece or introduced by the makers to exactly copy an original piece from a Tang Dynasty tomb. If a copy, it could have been made in the late 20th century or earlier. It has been in our collection since the 1990's.
The horse stands 8 inches tall and about 8 1/2 inches long. The thickness is proportional outlet to the height and length. The saddle and blanket are very realistic as are the colors of the glazes/underglazes. There are no marks under the base.
This is a very beautiful example of a Tang tomb piece.
