The Vitruvian Man is a Leonardo's pen and ink drawing on paper (34x24 cm) da Vinci, located in the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints of the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. Famous representation of the ideal proportions of the human body, demonstrates how it can be harmoniously inscribed in the two figures "perfect" of the circle, which represents the divine perfection, and the square.
The work is attributed to the period in which Leonardo, en route to Pavia (from June 21, 1490), he met Francesco di Giorgio, [1] making him a participant in his Treatise of architecture and of Vitruvius lesson of whose treatise de architectura Martini had started to translate some parts. Leonardo fact called himself "man without letters" (man without culture), because he had not had an education that would enable him to understand the Latin text; for this reworking of vernacular Vitruvian concepts had to prove particularly challenging, so much so that in those years is in fact also the so-called Manuscript B (Paris, Institut de France), dedicated to urban planning and architecture religious and military. [2]
The drawing is preserved in the galleries since 1822, when the Austrian government bought it (along with twenty-five other drawings by Leonardo) by the heirs of the Milanese collector Giuseppe Bossi.
The Vitruvian Man was chosen by Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, at the time Minister of Economy, later President of the Republic to appear on coins of 1 euro Italian, with highly symbolic meaning (the man as the measure of all things)
